Kinetic spectrophotometric determination of traces of sulphite

Abstract A method for the determination of sulphite is based on the addition reaction of
sulphite with Brilliant Green at pH 7 and 25 C. The decrease in absorbance of Brilliant Green
(λ max= 615 nm) over a fixed time is proportional to the concentration of sulphite over the
range of 10–1200 ng ml− 1. The limit of detection was found to be 5 ng ml− 1. Five replicate
analyses of a sample solution containing 1 μg ml− 1 sulphite gave a relative standard
